Part of our guide to how rare a four-leaf clover is. Four-leaf clovers show up on every St Patrick’s Day card. The Irish shamrock has three leaves.

The claim: “The shamrock is a four-leaf clover”

It isn’t. The shamrock has three leaves; the legend says St Patrick used it to explain the Holy Trinity, while the four-leaf clover stands for luck (Irish Family History Centre).

Verdict: 🔴 Vibes only — shamrock and four-leaf clover are two different symbols.

Which plant is the shamrock?

Nobody fully agrees. The word comes from the Irish seamróg, “little clover”, and several three-leaved plants go by the name, including white clover, suckling clover and even wood sorrel, which isn’t a clover at all (Almanac, quoting Britannica). History doesn’t record which plant St Patrick used; suckling clover has been widely used as the Irish symbol since the 18th century (News Tribune).

So if you want a shamrock charm, count to three. Our clover necklaces have four leaves: they are the luck symbol, not the Irish one.
