Description
What is carved on the beads?
Each bead carries large letters of an Indic-looking script, set over a carved cloud-like background; one bead shows a flower-like emblem, and the strand closes with a gourd-shaped bead. Our supplier describes the letters as the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra, written in Tibetan as ༀམཎིཔདྨེཧཱུྃ. We haven’t been able to read them ourselves yet, so we are having the script checked. Until then, we are not claiming what it says. Follow the check in our Om Mani Padme Hum guide.
What is Om Mani Padme Hum?
One of the best-known mantras of Tibetan Buddhism: six syllables in Sanskrit, associated with Avalokiteśvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. It is often translated as “the jewel in the lotus”, but scholars dispute that reading. The mantra is carved in several scripts, including Tibetan, Lantsa and Chinese.
Is it a feng shui bracelet?
No. Nothing carved on it relates to feng shui. The gourd-shaped bead is a traditional Chinese motif of longevity and protection; the rest of the carving belongs to the Buddhist tradition, if the script is confirmed.
What is it made of?
Ebony, with a deep, lustrous black finish. We are confirming the exact species with our supplier and will update this page when we have it.
Which size should I choose?
Available with 15, 18, 20 or 25 mm beads. The 20 mm version has 11 beads plus one larger bead, 12 in all. [À COMPLÉTER : nombre de perles pour 15, 18 et 25 mm.] Why bead size changes the fit: our 20 mm bead guide. How to measure your wrist: our wrist size guide.
Can I wear it if I’m not Buddhist?
Buddhist writers generally say yes, if you understand what you are wearing and treat it with respect. Our guide: can you wear a Buddhist bracelet if you’re not Buddhist?
How do I care for it?
Take it off before showering or swimming, and roll it on and off rather than stretching the cord over your hand. Wipe it with a dry cloth.
