What is carved on the beads?

Barrel-shaped beads carved with letters of an Indic-looking script. Our supplier describes them as the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra in Tibetan, ༀམཎིཔདྨེཧཱུྃ. What is Om Mani Padme Hum?

One of the best-known mantras of Tibetan Buddhism: six syllables in Sanskrit, associated with Avalokiteśvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. The usual translation, “the jewel in the lotus”, is disputed by scholars.

What is it made of?

Ebony, according to our supplier. We are confirming the species and will update this page when we have it.

What does the strand look like?

Can I wear it if I’m not Buddhist?

How do I care for it?

Take it off before showering or swimming, and roll it on and off rather than stretching the cord over your hand. Wipe it with a dry cloth.
