What is carved on the beads?

Rows of tiny characters cover each bead, and one bead carries a flower-like emblem. Our supplier describes the text as the Heart Sutra, one of the shortest and best-known Buddhist scriptures. We haven’t been able to read the characters on the photos yet, so we are having them checked.

Why was it called a “prayer wheel” bracelet?

A prayer wheel is a hollow cylinder holding a scroll of mantras, spun by hand. A carved bead can’t turn, so this bracelet is an image of that tradition, not a working version of it. We explain the difference in The Bracelet That Can’t Actually Turn.

Ebony, according to our supplier. We are confirming the species and will update this page when we have it.

How do I care for it?

Take it off before showering or swimming, and roll it on and off rather than stretching the cord over your hand. Wipe it with a dry cloth; a soft brush helps with the fine carving.
