<p>A yin-yang symbol engraved on each polished bead, and one gourd-shaped bead, a traditional Chinese motif of longevity and protection. There are no trigrams around the symbol.</p>

<h2>What does yin yang mean?</h2>
<p>Yin and yang are complementary opposites, an idea from Chinese antiquity. The swirling symbol itself is younger than most people think: it first appears in the 1370s, and its familiar form with two dots dates from the late Ming and Qing periods. Its link with divination comes from the eight trigrams of the I Ching, which aren’t carved on this bracelet.
