What is carved on the beads?
Chinese characters in round medallions, set on a geometric background. On the close-up photos we can read 阿, 陀 and 佛, and probably 南 and 無: the phrase 南無阿彌陀佛, “Homage to Amitābha Buddha”. Reciting this phrase, called nianfo, is the central practice of Pure Land Buddhism. Our reading still needs a second reader to be confirmed.
Is there an image of the Buddha?
No. The Buddha Amitābha is present through his name, carved in characters, not through a figure.
Is it Tibetan?
No. The invocation is written in Chinese characters and belongs to East Asian Pure Land Buddhism.
What is it made of?
A dense black wood, described by our supplier as ebony. We are confirming the species and will update this page when we have it.

How do I care for it?
Take it off before showering or swimming, and roll it on and off rather than stretching the cord over your hand. Wipe it with a dry cloth.
Ebony is no ordinary material. Grown slowly in tropical rainforests over decades, it’s among the rarest and most precious woods on earth. With an air-dry density of 0.9-1.14 (when submerged in water), it’s dense enough to feel substantial in your hand, yet warm to the touch. The deep black tone is natural, rich, and develops character as you wear it.
