Customer service: returns, guarantees and after-sales
Customer service for a jewelry brand: returns and the 14-day right of withdrawal, the exception for personalized pieces, legal guarantees and after-sales care.
For a small brand, customer service is often what turns a first order into a loyal customer, and a problem into a good review. After shipping, this step covers how to answer customers well, the rules on returns and guarantees, and the after-sales questions specific to gemstone bracelets.
1. Answer well, and fast
- One clear contact point: an email address or a form, shown on every page.
- A response time you can keep, written on your contact page.
- Saved replies for frequent questions: sizes, delivery times, care, returns.
- A FAQ page that answers those questions before they are asked.
- A personal tone: customers of a small brand appreciate talking to a person.
2. Returns: the 14-day right of withdrawal
In the European Union, consumers who buy online can usually cancel within 14 days of delivery, without giving a reason. They normally pay the return postage, unless you offered to pay it or didn’t inform them of this cost before the purchase. The UK has a similar 14-day cancellation right; in the United States, there is no general federal right of return, so your own policy sets the rules.
3. Legal guarantees
Separately from the right of withdrawal, EU consumers benefit from a legal guarantee of at least 2 years from delivery when a product is defective or doesn’t match its description. The seller must repair or replace it free of charge, or refund it when that isn’t possible. A defect that appears within the first year is presumed to have existed at delivery. This guarantee applies even to personalized pieces, and a commercial warranty you offer can add to it but never reduce it.
For a stone bracelet, that covers for example a stone that isn’t the one described, or a piece that breaks in normal use soon after delivery. It doesn’t cover normal wear, or damage from water, chemicals or knocks, which is why clear care advice matters.
4. After-sales for gemstone bracelets
- Broken cord: decide upfront whether you restring for free, at cost, or within a time limit, and say it on your site.
- Faded or damaged stones: often due to sun, water or chemicals; explain care before the problem arrives. Our gemstone bracelet care guide can help.
- Wrong size: offer a resizing service; it often turns a disappointment into a returning customer.
- Questions about meaning or benefits: answer with tradition (“traditionally associated with”) and never with health promises.
5. Reviews
Ask satisfied customers for a review after delivery, answer every review politely, including negative ones, and never publish invented reviews: fake reviews are prohibited in the EU and by the FTC in the United States, and destroy trust when discovered.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to accept returns of personalized bracelets?
In the EU, goods made to order or clearly personalized are excluded from the 14-day right of withdrawal, if you inform customers before the purchase. The legal guarantee against defects still applies.
Who pays return shipping?
For a withdrawal in the EU, usually the customer, if you informed them beforehand. For a defective product, the seller.
Should I repair broken cords for free?
It is a good way to build loyalty. Define a clear policy (free within a period, or at cost) and display it on your site.
