Namibia and its hard-to-find stones

Two of our bracelet stones are closely tied to Namibia. Blue lace agate, with its fine sky-blue and white bands, came mainly from a deposit in the south of the country, worked from the 1960s and now closed: what is sold today often comes from other countries, sometimes in slightly different tones.

Pietersite is named after Sid Pieters, who discovered it in Namibia in the 1960s. Its shimmering blue and gold flashes swirl like a stormy sky. Namibia also supplies a deep blue sodalite that is much sought after.

Good to know

Blue lace agate and pietersite are forms of quartz: they are hard (6.5 to 7) and easy to live with. Sodalite, softer (5.5 to 6), keeps its polish better if it isn't rubbed against rings or metal bracelets.
