South Africa, birthplace of tiger's eye
The Northern Cape deposits around Griquatown supplied most of the world's tiger's eye for over a century. Its silky sheen comes from mineral fibres replaced by quartz, which catch the light like fabric. When heated, tiger's eye turns red: this is often what is sold as bull's eye.
Further north, the Kalahari manganese mines, N'Chwaning in particular, have produced some of the finest rhodochrosite crystals in the world. The country is also among the historic producers of fluorite.
Good to know
Tiger's eye is tough (7 on the Mohs scale) and copes well with everyday wear. Rhodochrosite, on the other hand, is soft (3.5 to 4): keep it away from knocks and household products. Fluorite, at 4, scratches easily: it's best stored on its own, in a pouch.
