China, a civilisation of jade
In China, jade, « yu », has been worked since the Neolithic: the Liangzhu culture was already carving ritual discs and tubes from it more than five thousand years ago. Confucius compared its qualities to those of a virtuous person. The most famous nephrite comes from Hotan (Hetian) in Xinjiang, where it was once gathered from riverbeds.
Today China is also the world's leading producer of freshwater pearls, cultured mainly in the lakes and rivers of Zhejiang, and a major producer of fluorite and Akoya pearls.
Good to know
The name « jade » covers two different minerals, nephrite and jadeite, and the trade also uses it for stones that are not jade at all, such as quartz or chalcedony dyed green. Freshwater pearls are cultured pearls made almost entirely of nacre: they dislike perfume, hairspray and chlorinated water. Put them on last, take them off first.
