Italy, volcanoes and the island of iron
The island of Elba has been mined for iron ore since Etruscan times: hematite and pyrite form shining crystals there that are among the finest in Europe, and Rio Marina has a museum dedicated to them. The Romans already knew that hematite powder leaves a blood-red streak, hence its name, from the Greek « haima », blood.
Etna and Vesuvius are a reminder that lava stone is first of all a volcanic rock, light and full of gas bubbles. In the Alps, the Aosta Valley and Piedmont supply green serpentines, long used in decoration and architecture.
Good to know
Commercial lava beads are porous basalt, sometimes dyed black; their tiny holes can hold a drop of essential oil, which makes them popular for scented bracelets. Pyrite dislikes moisture: take it off before showering or swimming, and wipe it dry if it gets wet.
